There was talk about ways to send update PMs to a large group of people in another thread, and I figured I'd share my own.

1. Copy and paste the following into Notepad or some other text editor (note: do not use MS Word) and save it as, I dunno, masspm.html or something.

<html>

<head>
<title>Mass-PMing HTML</title>
</head>

<body>

<form method="get" name="pmform">
PM List:<br>
<textarea name="pmlist" cols="20" rows="5"></textarea><hr>
Subject: <input type="text" name="pmsubject" size="30"><br>
Body:<br>
<textarea name="pmbody" cols="80" rows="10"></textarea><br>
<input type="submit" value="submit">
<input type="reset" value="clear">
</form>

<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
function gethashkeyorvalue(hashstring,divider,keyorvalue){
return hashstring.split(divider)[keyorvalue];
}

function gethashvalue(hasharray,keyvalue){
for(j=0;j<hasharray.length;j++){
if(keyvalue==gethashkeyorvalue(hasharray[j],"=",0)){
return gethashkeyorvalue(hasharray[j],"=",1);
}
}
return "";
}

function stringreplace(string,searchstring,replacestring){
return string.split(searchstring).join(replacestring);
}

var pmlisthashstring=gethashkeyorvalue(location.href,"?",1).split("&");

var pmlistvalue=gethashvalue(pmlisthashstring,"pmlist","&");
var pmsubjectvalue=gethashvalue(pmlisthashstring,"pmsubject","&");
var pmbodyvalue=gethashvalue(pmlisthashstring,"pmbody","&");

document.pmform.pmlist.value=stringreplace(unescape(pmlistvalue),"+"," ");
document.pmform.pmsubject.value=stringreplace(unescape(pmsubjectvalue),"+"," ");
document.pmform.pmbody.value=stringreplace(unescape(pmbodyvalue),"+"," ");

var pmurltemplate="http://boards.theforce.net/pm_send.asp?message_subject=";
pmurltemplate=pmurltemplate+pmsubjectvalue+"&message_body="+pmbodyvalue+"&user_name=";

pmlistvalue=stringreplace(unescape(pmlistvalue),"\r","\n");

var pmusers=pmlistvalue.split("\n");
for(j=0;j<pmusers.length;j++){
if(pmusers[j]==""){
continue;
}
document.write('<a href="'+pmurltemplate+pmusers[j]+'" target="_blank">');
document.write(stringreplace(pmusers[j],'+',' ')+'</a><br>');
}

//-->
</script>

</body>

</html>

2. Open the HTML file with your Internet browser.

3. Fill in the blanks.

Note: the user names on the PM list need to be on separate lines, e.g.:
lazykbys_left
lazykbys
MaraJadeIndex
GWGchallenges
Separating them with commas won't work unless you change the JavaScript coding.

Also, this doesn't work for long PMs (more than 1200 characters long). Don't ask me why.

4. Click the "submit" button.

5. Click on the user names at the bottom of the page. This will open PM pages in new windows (or new tabs, depending on your browser). If you would rather use the Back button, delete target="_blank".

Wow, figures it'd be lazy to the rescue.

Now let's pretend I'm a totally newbie to the computer. (or just plain dumb in my case. tongue )
Got the first thing done. (Copy and paste in text editor grin )

Open the HTML file with your Internet browser.

Where? How?

Does this work with Firefox?

Maybe it is just my Firefox, but I have a ton of trouble with html and Java Script coding on this here browser.

Healer_Leona: Where?

Wherever you saved the file. I would guess it's somewhere on your desktop.

How?

I think double-clicking on the file icon will do the trick. If not . . . um, please wait while I google to see what the menu looks like in English.

. . . ah, got it.

Right-click the file icon. Go where it says "Open With" and you should get a list of programs. Click on the name of the browser.

Luna_Nightshade: Does this work with Firefox?

I tested this on Internet Explorer 6 and Netscape 7. I don't know about Firefox or other browsers. Sorry.

EDIT: added answer to "Where?", just in case.
EDIT 2: Found the right-click menu. Google images be praised. happy

Lazy, I would just like to inform you that I love you madly. love

You showed us before how to automatically put subject lines and text into a PM--which would be useful for people receiving mass replies, like those who run contests or update popular indexes and things. Right now, people tend to create socks for this purpose--handy if you want to share or hand it off to someone--but annoying because of the logoff/logon thing. If PM's could be automatically flagged with certain subjects, people could easily separate out their personal PM's from their "job" PM's, and it wouldn't be as hard to work from their primary accounts.

You wouldn't mind telling us how to do that again, would you? batting

Actually, as far as I'm concerned, you could just run a permanent "undocumented TFN feature" thread. (Not that you'd necessarily want to.) tongue

ophelia: You showed us before how to automatically put subject lines and text into a PM. You wouldn't mind telling us how to do that again, would you?

Not at all. happy

Subject line:
http://boards.theforce.net/pm_send.asp?user_name=USERNAME&message_subject=SUBJECT

PM text:
http://boards.theforce.net/pm_send.asp?user_name=USERNAME&message_body=TEXT

Both:
http://boards.theforce.net/pm_send.asp?user_name=USERNAME&message_subject=SUBJECT&message_body=TEXT

Replace all spaces with + signs (e.g., "all work and no play" -> "all+work+and+no+play") and keep in mind that there's a limit to how long the URL can be before the IGN board coding automatically inserts a space.

Also, user_name=USERNAME can be replaced with usr=USER_ID if you prefer marginally shorter URLs.

Wow Lazy! You're a genuis, for months now I've been kicking myself, thinking 'there must be a better way to do this'. And I'm pretty thick when it comes to java, so...

Thanks!

Just a semi-related question, if you don't mind . . . is there a TFN equivalent of the HTML [plaintext] tag, which would allow us to send formatted text in PM's without the hassle of "exploding" the code and then having the person on the other end piece it back together? That always struck me as a dreadful waste of time . . .

Not that I know of. But there's a PHP program I made a while back to change HTML markup codes in PMs into IGN markups. Open the PM's HTML source code, copy & paste it into the top blank, and submit.

That looks like it will be very useful. Copying and Pasting was getting a little tedious, so many thanks.
